West Plains City officials and Police Department said citizens have reported receiving phone calls from an entity claiming to be with the West Plains Municipal Court, West Plains Police Department, the Howell County Sheriff’s Department or the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The person is reported to be using Judge William Hass’ name within the call, referencing a warrant involving the recipient of the call and demanding payment.
Officials have termed the calls “a phone scam” and is similar to another scam reported in the Tuesday edition of the Daily Quill.
City officials and law enforcement officers assure area residents that the municipal court will not contact individuals by phone regarding warrants, and will not request payment over the phone.
Law enforcement officers remind the public that payment for fines is never taken over the phone and calls are not made to inform suspects of outstanding warrants. “Do not give out personal information over the phone regarding these calls,” said a spokesperson.
Anyone receiving such calls is encouraged to report them to the West Plains Police Department, 256-2244.
