Scammers using law enforcement to make a quick buck are now targeting victim ST. JOSEPH, Mo. Scammers – using law enforcement to make a quick buck – are now targeting victims in northwest Missouri. According to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department, a caller identifies himself as Lt. Lewis or Deputy Matt Gildon with the department. He calls potential victims and claims that he works in the warrants division at the sheriff’s department. The scammer states that he is calling on behalf of a judge about a warrant. He instructs them to get a money order from Walmart or Walgreens then call him back for further instructions. The call goes to voicemail when the number is called back. The sheriff’s department advises that employees DO NOT call individuals with warrants and ask them for money. The scam has been reported in Buchanan and Clinton counties.
