The Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of a phone scam involving the department.
People in the area have reported receiving calls from a person identifying himself as “Deputy Doyel” and claiming to work for the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office, according to a statement on the office’s Facebook page.
The subject has asked people to return his call at 573-342-9107, and the voicemail message at this phone number claims to represent the sheriff’s department — but the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office confirms it is not a department number.
“We are unsure what he is exactly trying to do at this time, but we want to inform everyone that this subject does not work for our office and we are currently trying to track down where the person is located,” the statement says.
The sheriff’s department reminds people that the office will never solicit payments over the phone at any time.
